Personal Computing
Cardiff University and the School of Computer Science & Informatics encourage students to use their own computer workstations and laptops. The University provides wireless and wired networking in Halls and on-campus so that you may connect your systems to the Internet. Some applications and software are available for installation on you own systems or through remote working.
Using Your Own Computer
Students and staff may register their privately-owned computers and laptops to use the University's networks. Both wired and wireless networking are available.
(The RESLAN page is on Information Service's website.)
CU-Wifi and Eduroam wireless networks are available throughout the campus.
There are University Regulations which prescribe the services you are permitted to use on the University's networks. Details of these Regulations can be found on the University's corporate compliance site.
It's also important to protect your computer against viruses. Practical advice is offered by Information Services, with download links to anti-virus software (available to staff and students under a site licence), on the Computer Security and Virus Protection pages.
Accessing University Resources
Many School and University resources are accessible on personal machines on Campus through the network, and off Campus through the Internet.
More details can be found on the Remote Working page.
Software for Personal Machines
Some software used in the School may be installed on your own computer, in pursuit of your studies or University work.
