Software Information

A wide variety of software is used in the School for research, teaching and administration. The School's laboratory and administrative workstations, which are managed by the computing facilities & technical support team, have hundreds of software applications pre-installed (or installed-on-demand by Novell ZENworks).

For non-managed or stand-alone workstations owned by the School, users or the support team can install software which is

  • open source,
  • licensed centrally by the University,
  • licensed by the School,
  • licensed by an individual staff member or research student.

Centrally-licensed software includes Microsoft Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office, Oracle Relational Database Management System, and many other commonly-used Windows applications. School-licenced software includes Mathematica, MATLAB, Visual Paradigm, MacOSX Lion and Microsoft applications under MSDN.

Some software is available for personally-owned systems — workstations and laptops owned by students and staff. This includes (with some restrictions) Mathematica, Oracle clients, and Microsoft software (including Windows 7) from Microsoft DreamSpark Premium (previously known as the MSDN Academic Alliance - MSDNAA).
